Changing Direction

I was attending seminary and had not worked in a paid job for seven years. I was trained in technology, but things had changed. I had few skills to fit in the marketplace anymore, as I had spent the past seven years serving God and learning theology at the seminary.

My husband had lost his job and we were coming on a year with no income to pay the bills which included my seminary bill. I prayed to God, “If you want me to take my skills and go into the marketplace then I will apply with my resume but you have to bring me a job by Feb 1 before the semester started and I will then know that you are calling me in a bit of a different direction”.

Now seminary is a calling, and I could not believe God would disrupt that calling for something in the marketplace but faithfully I put together my resume and I applied for a job on January 15, just 15 days before the Feb 1 deadline. I had a series of interviews and a job offer ON Feb 1.

Now I don’t recommend giving God a deadline, but I think in this case I would not have believed it any other way. The lesson I learned is you never know when and where you are called and sometimes God changes the direction. So calling is something we must ask often and listen for a change in direction.
